Modena Ella Kruger Sullivan

June 18, 1921 ~ July 25, 2014 (age 93) 93 Years Old
Modena Ella Kruger Sullivan was born on June 18, 1921 to Fannie Bell Haynes Kruger and John Henry Fredrick Kruger at the LaFour/Rayner House in Pine Island, Texas.  She was a lifelong resident of Chambers County, and Charter Member of:  Oak Island Baptist Church (OIBC),  The American Legion Auxiliary,  and the James Taylor White I Chapter of the Daughters of The Republic of Texas.  Mrs. Sullivan taught Sunday School, VBS, and sang in the choir at First Baptist Church (FBC)  in Anahuac and later when Oak Island Baptist Church became a mission of FBS, she was a dedicated worker there teaching and leading singing for many years.  She was instrumental in assisting in early 4-H and Horse Show and Youth Project work in Chambers County and the building of the American Legion Hall at Ft Anahuac Park.  As a Registered nurse she worked for Doctor G.H. Fahring, the Anahuac Clinic, the Chambers County Hospital and occasionally for AISD as a school nurse.

Cedar Grove School on the East Fork of the Double Bayou was the first school Modena attended, later transferring to Anahuac High School where she graduated in 1939. After high school she attended UTMB Medical School graduating as a Registered Nurse.  She married William Clyde Sullivan in 1942. Modena was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years and their infant daughter, Clydena.

Her passions and interest were in archaeology, anthropology and religion.  She loved reading, sewing, needle work, gardening, cooking, canning and preserving foods.  She was an historian and meticulous genealogist and also collected stamps, coins, old bottles and antique treasures. Modena enjoyed her cattle, horses, dogs and her home.  Mrs. Sullivan enjoyed birdwatching, planting for butterfly gardens, and sitting on her front porch to watch and hear the actions and sounds of nature.   She was very involved as a voting judge and a volunteer for the commodities distribution of Chambers County.  Mrs. Sullivan was a horticulturist, conservationist and environmentalist at heart and was ahead of her time in preventative and home remedy medicine.

Memaw or Aunt Dena as she was lovingly known by her closest family members leaves to cherish her memory:  one daughter, Andrea and husband Bobby McClelland, of Anahuac, one son Warren Sullivan, and wife Melonie of Lawrence, KS.  Her grandchildren:  Rob McClelland of Anchorage, AK, Cody McClelland of Williamstown, KY. Lindsey Sullivan Kimball and husband Micah of  Denver, CO, Alex Sullivan and wife Jenny of  Colorado Springs, CO. and Abby Sullivan of Newport Beach, CA. and two great grandchildren;  Kenner McClelland and Benjamin McClelland of Williamstown, KY.   She also leaves a host of family and friends who will miss her presence and contributions to our community.
