Lorene Marie Lewis

Lorene Marie Lewis, 80, of Dayton, Texas passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 in Humble, Texas. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many. She was born on July 22, 1936 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to M.A. and Florida Reed Hardy. Lorene graduated from Dayton High School in 1954. In her younger years, she played softball for the Dayton Swingers and was said to be one of the best first basemen. Lorene worked as a school bus driver for Dayton ISD for 13 years and Liberty ISD for 5 years. Her kids on the bus would call her the “hot rod granny.” Lorene was a gentle, kind and compassionate woman, always putting her family first. She adored her grandchildren so dearly. Lorene had several hobbies, some of which included playing dominos with her friends, walking and cooking. The people close to Lorene would tell you that she made the best gumbo around. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Terry Hughes; and her stepmother Edna Hardy. She leaves behind to cherish her memories her loving husband of 61 years and 9 months, Walter Lewis of Dayton; her sons Pete Lewis of Jefferson County and Dennis Lewis, Sr. of Dayton; her grandchildren Dennis Lewis, Jr. and Meagan Noble, Courtney Wood, Sabrina James and husband Tyler, Lindsey Lewis and Whitney Marks; her sister Debbie Walker and husband Judge Bob Walker of Gulfport, Mississippi; her daughter-in-laws Sheryl Long of Katy, Texas and Linda Rombs of Dayton, Texas; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 2pm until 4pm on Sunday, March 19, 2017 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N. Main Street, Dayton, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Sterling Funeral Home. A graveside service and committal will immediately follow in Palms Memorial Park Cemetery.
