Ross Reed

December 12, 1923 ~ February 8, 2016 (age 92) 92 Years Old
Ross “Rusty” Reed passed away Monday February 8, 2016 in Temple, Texas. He was born on December 12, 1923 in Dayton, Texas, son of the late Phelps and Maggie (Holstein) Reed. Ross was raised in Dayton, and was a member of the Dayton High School Class of 1942, where he played Left End during the 1941 Regional Champion Broncos.  After high school Ross had the honor of serving his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps in 1943 and served in Hawaii during World War II.  He was honorably discharged after two years of service, and he returned home to join the love of his life. Ross married Virginia Hale in May of 1946 and began to build his life with her. He began working for Gulf States Utilities climbing poles, but gradually worked his way up into management. He and Virginia moved to New Caney in 1973, and he retired from his dedicated career in 1986. During his free time, Ross enjoyed playing dominoes and working outdoors in his yard. He was known as a very kind and gentle man who was loved by all, especially dogs and children. Mr. Reed’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff members of William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home and Hospice Compassion for the care they provided to their father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.

Ross was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of sixty-three years, Virginia (Hale) Reed; brothers, J.D. Reed, Alford Reed, Louie Reed, Ebbie Reed, James Reed, and Boyd Reed; and his sisters, Ludie Reed, and Dorothy (Reed) Andrews. He leaves behind to cherish his loving memory his beloved daughter, Linda Thomson, her husband Brian, two grandchildren, Parker Thomson and Samantha Thomson, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Friends are invited to visit with the family at 9:00AM, Friday, February 12, 2016 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, located at 602 North Main in Dayton. Funeral Services will follow at 10:00AM, also in the Sterling Funeral Home Chapel.
