Dorothy Jean Bennett, 77, longtime resident of Dayton, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 31, 1940 in Utica, Mississippi to Lionel Clayton and Clara Louise Booker Byron.

Dorothy married the love of her life, Wane Bennett, on January 21, 1957. Sixty years united in a perfect marriage, she made it a full-time job to keep Wane in line. Dorothy loved her family and grandchildren unconditionally. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, caretaker and friend to many and will be deeply missed. Dorothy was a local business owner of Genie Carpet Cleaning Services and the Print Shop in Dayton.

Dorothy enjoyed photography, creating web pages, oil painting and crocheting. In her younger years, she enjoyed karate and even received her black belt in her 40’s. Dorothy’s favorite hobby of all was spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her son Quindell Bennett; her three brothers, Lionel Clayton Byron Jr., William Glen Byron and Wilson Lamar Byron; her two sisters, Kathaleen Byron and Betty Byron Holt. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving husband Wane Bennett; her daughters Gina Wane Patrick and husband Timothy and Dorothy Bennett Cotten and husband Ricky Wayne; her grandchildren Daniel Wane Bennett and wife Angelia, Curtis Leon Speer, Christopher Alan Alvarez and wife Karla and Dale Eric Speer; her nine great-grandchildren; her brothers Malcolm Leon Byron and Gerald Daniel Byron; her sisters Rita Elaine Byron Broussard and Peggy Byron Sexton; her numerous nieces and nephews; and other loving relatives and friends.

Honoring the family by serving as pallbearers will be Dale Eric Speer, Daniel Bennett, Christopher Alvarez and Robert “Bubba” Bacon.

Friends are invited to visit with the family beginning at 1pm on Saturday, December 23, 2017 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N. Main Street, Dayton, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2pm, with Rev Clint Sylvester officiating. A graveside service and committal will immediately follow in Palms Memorial Park Cemetery in Dayton.
