Daniel Jett Hankamer

Daniel Jett Hankamer, 81, of Hankamer, Texas, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 in Anahuac, Texas. He was born on July 30, 1936 in Hankamer to Jett and Gladys Moor Hankamer. Dan graduated from Anahuac High School in 1952 and received his Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1956. 

Dan was a retired farmer, rancher and merchant. He was an avid cattleman and rancher, it’s what he loved to do more than anything. Dan and his wife Zelphia previously owned and operated DJ’s Country Store for 17 years and a crawfish business for 12 years, both serving Chambers County and surrounding areas. 

Dan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. He cherished his family and adored his wife of 45 years. Dan was the most generous man, always wanting to give to his children and to many others. Always willing and wanting to help when and where he could, even at the drop of a hat. His heart was full and was as big as all of Texas. 

Dan enjoyed great outdoors, deer, dove and duck hunting, vegetable gardening, loving on his puppies, cattle ranching, dancing and cooking for his friends. He was an avid supporter of the Chambers County Youth Project Show, Trinity Valley Exposition (TVE) and barbeque cook off’s in Anahuac and Winnie. Dan was a Lifetime Member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Past President of the Winnie Rice Farmers Cooperative Association, Director of Security for Security State Bank of Anahuac, Honorary Director for Southwest Cattle Raisers Association and Past Master of the Anahuac Masonic Lodge. 

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Wayne Hankamer and his wife P.D. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife Zelphia Jenkins Hankamer; his sons Danny Hankamer and wife Kelly, Mike Hankamer, Mitch Hankamer and wife Cammie; his daughters Tanya Lowrance and husband Reid and Tonya Troxell; his grandson Kade Koenig, Mason Hankamer, Jack Lowrence, James Reid Lowrance, Connor Hankamer and Shane Koenig; his only granddaughter, Tanner “Bug” Koenig; his great-grandson Parker Ross Koenig; his brother Lester Hankamer and wife Ann and their children Les, Jr., Suzanne and Lynette; his special niece Arlette Hankamer Williams and her two brothers, John Hankamer and Hank Hankamer; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. 

Honoring the family by serving as pallbearers will be Kade Koenig, Mason Hankamer, Jack Lowrance, James Reid Lowrance, Connor Hankamer and Shane Koenig. Honorary pallbearers are Cade Witherspoon, Blake Matheson, Halley Moor, Jr., Tanner “Bug” Koenig, Dr. Dick Sherron, Joe Adams, Jr., Larry Windham, Pedro Gutierrez, D.J. Lewis and Jimmy Childress. 

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 12pm until 2pm on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the Hankamer Community Fellowship, 2858 FM 1663, Hankamer, Texas. Funeral services will begin at 2pm following the visitation with Bro Mark Pagels officiating. A Masonic graveside service will immediately follow in Anahuac Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dan’s honor to the Chambers County Museum of Wallisville or to the Christian Community Fellowship Education Building Fund in Oak Island, Texas.
