Tribute

Benjamin G. Sweet, Jr., 89, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. He was born on June 18, 1928, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Violet Chastain and Benjamin G. Sweet, Sr. and he had lived in Wichita, Kansas, San Antonio, Texas, Pharr, Texas and finally in Anahuac, Texas. 

Benjamin proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He also served as a Mason and was a member of the Lonnie Irvin Daylight Masonic Lodge No. 1309 in San Antonio, Texas. Ben was also a Shriner and was a Shriner clown, participating in parades and fundraising for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. He also transported children and their parents to the hospital in Houston from the Rio Grande Valley. Ben and his wife Ollie were members of the Hankamer Community Fellowship Church in Hankamer, Texas. 

Ben tutored children who needed help to increase their reading skills for a number of years. He was in a partnership with his father in a business where they designed and installed elevators. Later he worked for a company as a repairman and manager until his retirement. 

Ben was a devoted and loving husband and an amazing father, grandfather, and friend to many. He enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling, cruising and most of all, visiting with his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. 

Ben preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 55 years, Mary Lee Sweet; his daughter Pamela Elizondo; and his son David Sweet. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his second wife of 11 years, Ollie Jean Sweet; his son Phillip L. Sweet; his 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and other loving relatives and friends. 

A memorial service in Ben’s honor will be held at 2pm on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the Hankamer Community Fellowship Church on Highway 1663 in Hankamer, Texas.
