David Gau
April 6, 1935 ~ July 17, 2010
Clinton David Gau, 75, of Smith Point, was born in Smith Point, Texas on April 6, 1935 to Margaret Cornelia (Nelson) Gau and Leonard Clinton Gau. He died on July 17, 2010, at his home.
David married his sweetheart, Katie Bessie Kahla, on April 5, 1958 then went off to serve our country in the Army until 1964. David started out working as a commercial fisherman, and then worked for Brown and Root for 20 years, where he worked as a welder, fitter, tow boat driver, boss and mentor to young men, and then later returned to fishing. He was a Christian who loved God, his family and church (longtime member of Oak Island Baptist Church). David was a friend, soul mate to Bessie, loving, generous man who would adopt every child (not on paper) who would come to the house. He grew a bigger garden than met their needs so he could share with other family and friends. David also enjoyed hunting and because he cared so about his family, would travel anywhere to any event if invited because he knew it was important to that family member.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Donald R. Gau; and sisters, Barbara and Ruth Gau.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Bessie Gau of Smith Point; son, Charles Henry Gau of Smith Point; sisters, Mary Boyte and husband, Tom of Brookhaven, Mississippi, Nelda Douglas, of Brookhaven, Mississippi and Betty Nettles of Smith Point; and numerous nieces, nephews and many children who knew him as “Uncle Dave”.
The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, at Sterling Funeral Home. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Oak Island Baptist Church with Bro. Eddie Shauberger officiating and burial to follow at Jackson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sam Glass, Charles Johnson, Monroe Kreuzer, Bob McClelland, E. J. Manuel, Elmo Peddy and Bobby Scherer. Honorary pallbearers are all of his nephews.
Final arrangements for David have been entrusted to Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main, Anahuac, Texas 77514, (409) 267-3456. Condolences for David’s family may be left online at www.sterlingfuneralhome.com.
