Alma Lois (Harmon) Turner passed away in Beaumont, Texas at the age of 90 on Saturday, July 19, 2014. She was the daughter of Alva Joshua and Mildred (Moor) Harmon and the granddaughter of Charles S. and Florence (Brown) Harmon and Euel Lester and Nora Eve (Stengler) Moor.
Alma Lois attended grade school in Hankamer, graduated from Anahuac High School in 1942, where she played basketball and was a cheerleader, and attended a business school in Beaumont after high school graduation. She began her working career in the Ration Office at the courthouse in Anahuac and in 1946, she became secretary to the County Judge and served in that capacity under five different Judges, later serving as County Judge for eight years until her retirement in January, 1987. She was an adult leader of the 4-H Horse Club and cordinator of the Chambers County Youth Project Show for many years, always looking forward to the show each May.
The first Harmon saddle was built by Joshua Harmon and Charles S. Harmon continued that tradition which was passed on to Alva J. Harmon and later to his three children. After her father’s death in 1973, Alma Lois continued to operate the Harmon Saddle Shop until May 2008. In October 1996, the saddle shop had a one hundred year celebration with the dedication of a State of Texas historical marker.
Alma Lois loved her cattle and horses, deer hunting, grandchildren and discussing politics whether local, county, state or national. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Anahuac, American Quarter Horse Association, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, Independent Cattlemen’s Association, Epsilon Sigma Alpha service sorority and the James Taylor White I Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was recognized by the Former Texas Rangers Foundation as a Captain in 2010.
Alma Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Ira A. “Bub” Turner, her parents, grandparents and brother, Alva J. Harmon, Jr. She is survived by one daughter, Patricia J. Turner; two sons, Otho E. Turner and wife Joy and Mike Turner, all of Hankamer; one brother, Billy E. Harmon, of Midland, Texas; grandchildren, Brooke Kraehnke and husband Jesse, of Winnie, Texas and Blake Turner and wife Brandy, of Hankamer, Texas and three great grandchildren, Teal and Kolt Kraehnke and Hadley Turner. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the Chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main, Anahuac, Texas.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church of Anahuac, with Rev. Kelly Krone officiating, with the interment to follow in Abshier Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Alma’s memory, can be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 609, Anahuac, Texas 77514 or to the Wallisville Heritage Park, P.O. Box 16, Wallisville, Texas 77597 or to the charity of one’s choice.
Serving as pallbearers for Alma Lois will be Danny Chambless, Stephen Greak, Robert Gotcher, Mitch Hankamer, Danny Syphrett and Josh Harmon. Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Hankamer, James Earl Weaver, Don Harmon, Linn Marcantel, Allen Barrow and Halley Ray Moor.
